Teaching Math to Kids: We Need New Media!

The United States is facing a very formidable challenge in the years ahead. The problem, how do you get more American kids interested in math, engineering, technology, and science? The reason this is a problem is because many of the baby boomers are starting to retire, and young people are just not interested in pursuing careers in these fields. Could math comics be part of the solution?

It’s a fact that technology and science are the bedrock of the global economy in which we now find ourselves in. Business and labor statistics tell us that employment in these areas alone will increase about 70% faster than the rates of other areas. With this sudden jump, it’s very tragic that American kids are not showing the interest or skills required to fill these types of jobs.

Middle school in particular needs our urgent attention. As our kids turn to teenagers, it is just “not cool” to be good in math or science. Peer pressure is huge at this age, and we need to support and encourage our kids in the areas of the maths and sciences before it gets to them. Unless we take the necessary steps now, we as a nation will pay the price in the years to come.

For whatever reason, boys seem to show more of an interest in math than girls. Did you know that young women now outnumber men in our college campuses now? Despite this fact, in many engineering disciplines women make up less than 20% of students. Professions that utilize math and science need to promote themselves as more “women friendly”. This will encourage our young girls to see a future in the maths and sciences they are learning at a young age.

New media tools are needed, and fast. Children need to have the wonders of math encouraged and reinforced by new medium, such as the Internet. They need to be shown how math can enrich their lives, and how it relates to their interests in such things as sports (i.e.: batting average statistics), music (i.e.: music is very mathematical), and fashion (i.e.: length’s and measures). They need to be shown that rather than a pain, math can be fun and exciting, and lead to a very rewarding career as well.

Could a math comic “fit the bill” as one of these “new media tools”? While comics have been around for years and years, they have been mostly used to entertain. We all grew up with comics relating stories of super heroes or talking mice or young romance. They were fun and entertaining, and certainly great to read in the back seat of the car on the ride to grandma’s house…but what of their entertainment value? Kids love comics, and if we can utilize the comic book medium to introduce math to them, they will be entertained, and educated in math at the same time.

A Novel New Approach to Teaching Math to Kids!

I was watching the news the other day and the statistic that was flashing on the screen was nothing less than shocking. It said 66% of kids in American grade 8 classes could not do math. 66%! After I let the news “sink in”, I started to ask myself questions such as “why is this happening?”, then the more powerful question, “what can we possibly do about it?” I’ve pondered these questions before, but it seems that the solution, one revolving around math comic strips, is more important now than it has ever been.

As we enter this brave new world of a global economy, our kids are going to need to have all the education they can obtain in order to compete for jobs with all those highly educated kids from other countries. I saw on television a while ago where tutors in South Korea were treated like “rock stars”. Why is this? It’s simply because in South Korea they realize that tutors are there to help educate their kids…education that will eventually help them get those great jobs of the future. Is this what we do in the United States? I’ll let the laughter subside before I continue…

In order to get our kids to do their homework, when there are so many distractions out there, we need to make their homework fun. If we don’t, other things will take priority in their lives. How can we possibly do this? Ah, this is where the time tested and proven format of the humble comic book enters into the equation. Comics have been around for years and years, but they have mostly been used to entertain, not educate. This doesn’t mean that we can’t alter the format a bit to help them teach our children essential math skills.

Math comic strips is dedicated to providing comic books that will help our kids learn math. Our flagship product is a “superhero” comic in which the hero (a mere human really) is able to solve problems and crimes via his superior math skills. Now how did he come across this math ability? He acquired it simply by doing his homework over the years. We are hoping that as kids read of the adventures of this “superhero” they will be inspired to do their homework just like he did…
